Furthering my thoughts on the “I Believe I Can Fly” song from Space Jam, since I have already listened to it a thousand times this week. (yes, I am exaggerating. Kind of.). I have been struggling writing this because I had this nagging thought that people would find it weird to look at this song with a Christian approach since this is not a Christian song but we are working on not worrying about what others have to say.
I have never thought deeply about the song until I fully paid attention to the lyrics being sung. The very first thing that plays is this:
“I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I’m leaning on the everlasting arms
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there’s nothing to it”
I have never related so much to some simple lyrics. Have you ever felt like you just couldn’t go on? If you have read through any of the posts, I have put on this blog then you know I have felt this exact way. And hopefully if you are reading this, then you learn from me and you don’t get lost in an identity crisis. When softball was over for me, I had no idea what I was going to do next, there is still times where I literally used to think that I could not go on! Not lying, there were moments in my life where no matter what I did, it meant nothing because I wasn’t doing what I loved to do anymore.
Now, I have no idea if R-Kelly was referencing Jesus at all in this song but that is how we are going to interpret it. Cause I can promise you, the only person that is going to show you what true love is and who has those everlasting arms he speaks of is Jesus and that is exactly who you should be leaning into, in those moments where you have no idea what to do in your life.
Life can look pretty meek at times, right? Somedays we feel pretty clear on what God has called us to do and other days we have no idea if we are even qualified for this thing we called life. If there is one thing that I believe whole heartedly it is this: If you say you can’t, then you won’t, if you say you can, then you will. Through the whole song this line is stated multiple times: “If I can see it, then I can do it, If I just believe it, there’s nothing to it.” Maybe that is just a prettier way of saying it, but it gives off the same notion. If you tell yourself constantly that you cannot do something, then I can promise you that you will fail at what you are saying you can’t do. But if you approach a situation saying you can do it and you believe you can do it then you will do everything in your power to make sure you get it done. Why can’t we do that with what God has called us to?
We see God create miracles in life, it is a miracle that you are even waking up and reading this post, yet we can’t believe Him when He has called us to something? It is time to stop thinking that we aren’t going to do anything with this life of ours. I know it seems that we could never have a passion for something anymore. I know it seems like we are never qualified for what God is calling us to but He is trying to open His everlasting arms to us so we can see all that he has in store. He is bringing us to that new passion. He is trying to help us fly. He needs you to believe that you are qualified, because oh my goodness you are!
Let God show you the love He has for you. Let God show you how strong your own wings are. Let God move in your life. He believes so much in us and our abilities that He has put in us, now it is our turn.
I may have felt like life had no meaning after I lost who I was, but I was able to find myself again once I realized the belief God had in me. It has been there all along, all I had to do was see it and believe it for myself. Now, it is your turn. I believe you can. Your turn to say, “I believe I can, because God said I can!”
Something to think about & journal if you are feeling spunky:
- Are you currently unsure on who the heck you are supposed to be?
- Do you ever doubt who God has called you to be?
- Is it time for you to start believing in yourself? (The answer is yes, once again.)
