Who Are You On The Inside?

Who are you on the inside? Like, are you clean or are you dirty? I know you are saying that you are clean…

I mean how clean are we really? How many of us make sure we look super clean on the outside? Meaning how many of us make ourselves look perfect? We are the perfect mom, perfect sibling, perfect wife, or perfect Christian? How many of us try to keep our highlight reel the only reel that we have when we know we are dirty on the inside? We are broken and a hot mess express? Think of in Luke 11 when Jesus goes to have dinner with the Pharisees. They got all kinds of booty hurt because He did not do the cleaning ritual of his hands before he went to eat. He responds to them (and I’m paraphrasing), you work so hard to clean the outside of the cup and forget about cleaning the inside so that part is still all dirty.

Didn’t God create the inside and outside? Mind blown. Getting into those more spiritual scriptures now, y’all.  It actually made sense to me. I mean you can take it how you would like but for me it was expressing all the surface work we do on ourselves to make it look like we have this amazing life put together when in reality we are barely making it by. We are barely making it to the next day or the next paycheck. Pretty sure we have probably cussed a few more times when we shouldn’t have, and we promised God that we would work hard on keeping our mouths clean. For some reason we have such a hard time letting people see our sin and that we are only human. Everyone expects Christians to be this perfect, well put together and never do anything rude kind of people. I’m not sure what kind of group of people they are but I have a hard time believing that I am supposed to act like this complete righteous person when I’m not. That’s not who God created me to be, and I know that now.

I don’t want to normalize sin. I want people to see the sin that we have done and know that even though we are just a hot mess group of people God is still pulling for us. He is still on our side, and he loves us regardless of all of that. The point I’m trying to make is that we must stop acting like we are better than those who have no idea who God is and starting loving people the way, we should. The way God tells us to love. I’ve been to churches and met people who literally make it known that they are disgusted by the people who are not living their lives according to God’s word. Listen, I am not saying that I am a super accepting person. There are things that people do in my life that I do not agree with. They know where I stand but I wouldn’t treat them any different than my friend who is in my group chat of sisters in Christ. You want to know why? Because they are a child of God. We are to show them love. We aren’t supposed to throw some metaphorical stone at them because the sin they are living in is probably no worse than the countless sins that I have done. I am not more righteous than them because they live their life differently than me. I will still call them my friend, but I will not condone what they do. You know what I will do? I will pray for them. I will pray that their eyes and hearts are opened to God’s word. Being clean on the inside is about loving those who most will turn away. It means putting God’s word into your spirit. Yes, that means you must actually read the bible. I know we’ve discussed that already before because it is serious stuff.

Take a minute to yourself and think about if people are seeing Jesus through you. We cannot attempt to better ourselves if we are deciding to not clean the insides of ourselves. This is not going to be an easy step. Let’s be real absolutely none of this is going to be easy. We are going to struggle but I’m hoping after all of this you will be able to find your identity in Christ and not the things surrounding you. I hope that you will be able to follow God’s promptings without questioning Him hundreds of times. The goal is obedience and to do it fearlessly.

Jesus chose us because we are human and we are relatable, not because we have some kind of perfect life. He is the only one that is perfect. He is the only who can judge us. It is time that we start cleaning our spirits. It is time we stop acting so righteous that we turn people away from God. Let people see Jesus in you.

Somethings to think about & journal if you are feeling spunky:

  • Have you been showing off your highlight reel to everyone?
  • Why don’t you show people who you really are?
  • How can people see Jesus through you today?
