Is it Quitting or is it Being Obedient?

I honestly hate the word “quit”. I used to make it a big deal that you should never quit anything. That quitters literally get nowhere in life, and you will never learn anything if you just keep quitting everything. I do still believe some of that but only to a point.

Sometimes you come to a point in your life where the things you were supposed to do forever are no longer apart of the plan. I have discussed over and over on this blog that God’s purpose will prevail regardless of what we have planned for our lives and sometimes that comes with ending something you never thought would end.

So, let’s make a very distinctive point, being obedient to God and doing what He wants you to do is not quitting. Please don’t use obedience for everything because some things we are probably just quitting because it wasn’t what we thought it would be, that’s a totally different discussion.

I read this bible verse last week:

Proverbs 23:4-5 NLT

“Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.”

This verse does say quit but, in this instance, this quit means obedience because I am sorry to tell you, getting rich is not the goal here, friends. I have watched people leave six figure positions to become stay at home parents because they hated missing their kids most important moments. I have watched people leave six figure positions to become ministers or go on missions and do God’s work. Most people would think they are crazy for leaving such a wealthy lifestyle but doing God’s work is not going to seem sane in other people’s eyes.

People are going to think it got hard, so you quit or maybe you weren’t good enough, so you quit, and we know that just isn’t the case. So, why aren’t we happy for those who finally decide to do what God is telling to do instead of making them feel crazy? Why aren’t we celebrating people doing everything they can to become the person God created them to be?

Most of this world has a one-track mind = make it in this world and get rich. My mind used to be there because I thought that was the only way that I was going to be happy. Well, apparently money doesn’t buy happiness, so I learned to pivot my mindset. Instead of asking, what do I want in this world? I started asking, what does God want me to do in this world? That is the question that needs to be focused on. If I have to “quit” something so I can be obedient to Him, then that is what I will do, and I won’t feel bad for it and the same goes for you.

If God has put something on your heart and you just know that is the route you are supposed to take, then it is time to make a change. People may think you are crazy. People may think you weren’t cut out for your current position. People may think it got too hard. People may think you are a quitter. People may even think that you aren’t qualified for what you know God is calling you to, but this is what you need to know:

If God called you to it then you are qualified. If God is calling you to it, then you aren’t quitting you are being obedient to God. People can think you are crazy but know that you are becoming who God created you to be and that is the best thing you can do in this life. Have peace about the decisions you make and move according to God’s word.

Somethings to think about & journal if you are feeling spunky:

  • Have you been postponing pivoting in your life because of how others may think?
  • Do you know God is calling you away from your current position?
  • Have people made you feel like a quitter even though you were making the best decision for you and your walk of faith?
