When Jesus predicts His death in Matthew 16, Peter throws a hissy fit because he refuses to believe that would happen. But Jesus responds with this: “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” Matthew 16:23
Man did this get my wheels turning. How are we perceiving the situations going on around us? Are we seeing things from a human perspective or are we seeing things God’s way? I feel like I can boldly say that I have looked through a human lens the majority of my life.
When we look through a human lens, we see life the way we want to see it. We make excuses for our sins, and we change the way we interpret God so that we do not feel guilty for going against God’s word. We strive to have life on our own terms instead of on God’s terms. How far has this perspective really gotten us in life? Be honest, do you not just completely stress out when you look at the world through a human perspective?
But this is what God says:
Matthew 16:24-28 NLT
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.’”
When we look at the world and our lives through God’s point of view we can be presented with peace and love. I know with this crazy world you may not think that, but your heart starts to change as you start to have eyes like Jesus. You can see the evil, the hate and the temptation and look past it because regardless of what is being seen we know that God will be victorious. His plan will always come to pass.
I challenge you to pray today and ask God to open your eyes and to see the way He sees. I pray for you to see yourself the way God sees you and not from a human perspective. If you look at yourself through a human lens you will be disappointed every time but if you look from God’s point of view you will see how loved, beautiful, and wonderful you are. Take up your cross the God wants you to. Recognize that sin is sin no matter how you try to sugar coat it.
Know that you will gain the whole world by looking through God’s eyes.
Something’s to think about & journal if you are feeling spunky:
- What lens are you using: human or God?
- Do you try to change the perception of God, so your sins don’t seem as bad?
- Are you going to follow through with your challenge and prayer?
